Home Owners

The key to making MegaChess a conversation piece is to leave the pieces in play. Your house guests can't help but look over the game, to see who is ahead, to speculate on what they would move. If you want party guests to enjoy a game, just leave the pieces set up for a new game — few can resist the invitation.

Either way, the sun and rain will not diminish the feel of teak. Compared to plastic or other artificial materials, the thick, natural texture sets you apart at the first touch.

Why buy art that gathers dust when you can own art that draws the eyes and hands of your guests. How can your guests keep from telling their friends about your MegaChess game, moving the pieces with two hands, feeling as part of the game as they walk among the pieces?

Do you wish you could get past the small talk around a BBQ? Or the awkward silence around new guests? Break the ice with, "Do you play chess?"

Which Chess Set?

Upscale homes should focus on teak or oak. If you or your friends are getting on in years, the 24" size is the best mix of elegance and ease of lift.

Lots of kids? Go with plastic.

Want to test the waters? Get a plastic set, and see how it works. If it becomes popular, you can always donate it to a local school or club for the tax write-off – and then get the teak set.

Tip: Put the chessboard, typically tile, where it can be seen but not next to a thoroughfare.

Want to attract friends who think? Give them something to lift besides a martini.

And if you have kids, is it time to give them an alternative to video games and TV? What kind of friends will a MegaChess set draw? Unlock the thinking side of your kids — at the same time that you get them out of the house.
