Onyx has found a special place in the history of civilization. Egyptian high priests utilized onyx goblets for sacred ceremonies. Ancient Romans held onyx to be a divine stone and drank out of onyx glasses to herald victories. Even in Biblical times, the high priest used onyx in special divine ceremonies.

"Onyx" is a calcium carbonate that is usually banded (and therefore resembles banded agate). It is also called travertine or flow stone and is a hydrothermal alteration of limestone. Much of this material comes from Mexico, Morocco and Pakistan.

The banding results from continuous sequential deposition of the carbonate minerals which creates the beautiful colors and patterns.

Marble and onyx have different physical properties. Onyx is soft, translucent and a semi precious stone. Although marble is tough, it is not translucent like onyx and not a semi precious stone.

Use this product with care to protect its surface. Acidic food and wine will dull the surface of the stone over time. This material is not safe for use in the dishwasher or microwave.
